Documents bound with spiral coil are easy to read, easy to turn, easy to mail and look great. The coil allows the pages to be turned 360 degrees for note taking and the spines are available in more than fifty different colors. Made from a flexible plastic most of our coils are 4:1 pitch for use with a hole pattern that has four holes per inch and can be used with most coil binding machines from GBC, Ibico, Akiles, Tamerica, DFG, Renz, Rhin-O-Tuff and more. The coils feature ends that are cut on an angle to make inserting easily and can be easily cut and crimped with a pair of crimping pliers for simple finishing.
Crimping â Coil elements must have the top and bottom ends of the element crimped, to prevent the coil from slipping through the holes of the document. This procedure can be accomplished either manually, with coil crimping pliers or with a semi automatic crimper such as the GBC heavy-duty CI-12 Inserter or the Akiles Finish@Coil.
4:1 Pitch vs. 5:1 Pitch â Most coil that you find on the market today is 4:1 pitch (four holes per inch). However for a different look some users prefer 5:1 Pitch, with 55 holes to the 11â binding edge. The number of pages in a 5:1 document are substantially less than in 4:1 since color coil spines are only available in sizes up to 25mm in 5:1 pitch while 4:1 pitch coil is available in sizes up to 50m
In the office environment, most coil that is used is 12â in length; which, when cut and crimped, become 11â for the 11â binding edge. However, some users do use 36â lengths of coil. These longer pieces of coil are more often used with AFD equipment and by print shops looking to bind documents in irregular sizes. Other custom lengths of coil are available for almost any size of document but are special order.
Millimeters vs. Inches â All color coil is sized in millimeters â ranging from 6mm through 50mm in 4:1 pitch. To determine the size of a coil, measure the inside diameter. MyBinding provides a chart to help you determine the correct sizing for your book in the coil binding supplies section of our website.
